History of CSS Holland America Line Inc.

Holland America Line traces its roots back to April 18, 1873, when it was founded as the Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij, or NASM, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The company primarily aimed to provide transatlantic passenger and cargo service between Europe and North America. Its inaugural voyage occurred on October 15, 1872, with the SS Rotterdam sailing from Rotterdam to New York City. In the early 20th century, Holland America Line expanded its fleet and route network, offering voyages to destinations beyond the transatlantic route. During World War I, many of the company's ships were requisitioned for military service, but Holland America Line New Amsterdam continued to operate, albeit on a reduced scale. The Holland America Line experienced significant growth and expansion following World War II. The company resumed its transatlantic passenger service and expanded its operations to include cruises to exotic destinations such as the Caribbean, South America, and the Mediterranean.
