Located where the Belize River flows into the Caribbean Sea, this bustling former capital is filled with history and culture. Your adventure starts with a welcome meeting at 6 pm where you'll meet your tour leader and tour group.
The area our hotel is situated is often called the tourist village. You can walk to the nearby lighthouse and experience the stunning sea views. If you have some spare time and want to explore the city further we suggest you take a taxi, even when traveling comparatively short distances. We can arrange for a taxi to pick you up at the hotel and wait for you at each stop. There are some attractive places to visit. Belize city is divided by the world's only surviving manual swing bridge. On the north side is the coastal and maritime museum, located in the elegantly restored former fire station. Also in the north is the Image Factory, showcasing contemporary Belizean artists, and the National Handicraft Centre. The ancient Anglican church in Central America, St John Cathedral, was established in 1812 with bricks brought as ballast in European sailing ships. The opposite is Government House, a protected colonial mansion.
Start from the hotel around 8 am to catch a local bus to San Ignacio, a lush tropical region decorated with waterfalls, warm swimming holes and the special cave systems of the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. After you arrive around 2:30 pm, take a tour of the majestic ruins of Cahal Pech, the oldest known Maya site in Belize. These ruins, which were once a major convention center, stand tall on a hill facing San Ignacio. Spend about two hours here enjoying at your own pace.
Leave the hotel at 8:30 am to board a 30-minute taxi ride to the border. After passing from Belize into Guatemala, travel by private vehicle, stopping for lunch en-route, and reaching Tikal around 1 pm. Tonight we camp on the grounds of a hotel which is situated close by to this grand Mayan site. Join your group at 2 pm to explore the National Park until sunset. Overlooking above the jungle, the five granite temples of Tikal are an excellent sight and one of the most brilliant Maya ruins. Covered in the forest growth is a maze of smaller structures just waiting to be explored. The energetic can climb to the top of the ruins for panoramic views over the canopy. You may even view toucans, macaws and other colorful birds.
If you are really impressed with Tikal you have the opportunity to visit the site again at sunrise this morning. Else it's a long travel day, so you'll leave the campsite by private vehicle at 7 am. Once crossing the border in Belize, travel by local bus to Belize City where we board a water taxi to Caye Caulker. The Belize Cayes are a collection of islands at a short boat ride distance from the coast. There are a number of these islands to pick from, but we base ourselves on Caye Caulker as this is one of the more famous islands with tourists. From here it is possible to organize day trips to other Cayes, to the best reefs for snorkeling, or just to take a local boat out to the reef of Caulker itself. Each island has its own distinct character, but all of them have a clear Caribbean pace and beauty. Simply relax on the beach or move to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, home to the Great Blue Hole and the world's second longest barrier reef. Snorkel among the bright corals and see tropical fish, sharks and manta rays.
On the closing day, you will take the 9 am water taxi back to Belize City. you can explore the city again, the before your new year holidays end at the port in Belize City. We will transfer you to the international airport for your home flight
