La Paz is placed within an amazing frame of snowcapped mountains which provides this city the honor as the highest capital in the world. La Paz is a city of diversity with ancient and modern constructions protected by the "Guardian of La Paz", Mount Illimani.
This afternoon your guide will take you to visit the Plaza Murillo, where the cathedral and the Government Palace are located. Proceed to the renowned San Francisco Church established in 1549 and a famous area for traditional handicrafts and artwork. You will also visit the Mirador Killi Killi, one of La Paz’s most majestic viewpoints featuring dramatic scenic views of the city.
The journey continues to Obrajes, Calacoto, and La Florida residential areas in the south and the famous Moon Valley, where erosion has given rise to the most fascinating and unique surface formation. Later you will board the Cable Car system known as Mi Teleferico, a public transportation system that will take us to new heights. Operating at 4000 m (13,000 ft) above sea level, the world’s highest cable car system has revolutionized the way locals travel between La Paz and neighbor city El Alto.
End your tour in the famous Witches’ Market located in the center of the city. You can explore this open-air market where the vendors sell medicinal dried herbs, seeds, llama fetuses and several others used in rituals.
Early morning drive for about 3 hours with your guide to Copacabana. From here, take a boat and sail for about 1-hour toward Sun Island. The Sun Island is admired as the birthplace of Manco Kapac and Mama Ocllo, the first founders of the Inca Empire. With your guide, explore the Pilkokaina Palace, the Inca’s Fountain, and the 200 stairs of Yumani. Relish a traditional Athapi lunch (a picnic with local cuisine) followed by about an hour long uphill trek to the La Estancia Lodge, your home for the night. Enjoy delicious dish at the dinner and the sunset on Lake Titicaca.
This morning return to Copacabana by boat. Visit this scenic city located between two mountains on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Explore the Inca localities outside of the city as well as the cathedral with its mysterious Virgin of Candelaria statue and museum of European and local religious art. Explorers interested in a workout can climb El Calvario and enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Titicaca and Copacabana. You will return to your hotel in La Paz in the afternoon.
Today we will transfer you to the airport to take an early flight to Uyuni, a village on the bank of the world’s largest salt flat, Salar de Uyuni. You have a full day to explore this unique landscape. On the way out of the city, you can visit the Uyuni train cemetery and learn about the production of salt bricks in the village of Colchani. Visit Huasi Island, a fantastic island surrounded by salt and studded caves cacti, some reaching almost 30 feet high. Spend the night at the famous Luna Salada, a hotel built of salt bricks.
Today after breakfast, board your 4-wheel and head out to explore the Lakes Canada, Hedionda, Charcot and the infamous Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon). The lake has a deep orange-red color from red algae and other microorganisms that flourish in the water. Surrounding the lake are huge white deposits of borax, rolling grasslands, and purple mountains. If you are lucky enough, you can view Puna Flamingos (also known as James’ Flamingo), a rare bird, native to the Andes and Altiplano. After exploration return to your hotel at Tayka Piedra.
Today awake early morning, and head out to drive over the border into Chile. On the way, you can visit the sunrise geysers, and the Valle de Dali, named after the great surrealist artist, Salvador Dali because of its unique landscape. Then continue to Laguna Verde, just on the Chilean border with excellent views of Licancabur Volcano rising above. From there enter at the border of Bolivia and Chile at Hito Cajon. Your guide will help you with the immigration process and connect you with the bus to San Pedro de Atacama. Once you reach San Pedro de Atacama you will be met by a local representative and he will take you to your lodge or hotel. Once you are settled into your room, head out to explore the area. This afternoon, explore the enormous sand dunes and polychromatic rock formations of the Valley of the Moon.
Over the next two days spend your time exploring the stunning blue waters of the Altiplanic lagoons Mescanti and Meniques. Getting up early in the morning will allow you departing after breakfast and returning in the mid-afternoon, leaving lots of time to read a good book, relax in the shade of the garden, or take a dive in the lodge's swimming pool. Be prepared though to rise early for the trip to El Tatio Geysers! Here you can see the sunrise over the world's highest geyser field. As the dawn breaks, you are treated to a marvelous sight of steaming geysers set against the azure-colored Antiplano backdrop. A short hike around the geothermal field lands you to the thermal pools. Take care where you step so as to avoid falling through the thin crust!
Today is the last day of your Latin America adventure travel. We will transfer you to the Calama airport to fly on to your next adventure or return to Santiago to fly home. If you have extra time, you can visit a stone craftsmen village, Atacama's salt flats, volcanoes, lagoons, and other incredible and otherworldly landscapes.
