On our first day is we have no scheduled activities. One of our tour leaders will meet you at the hotel and there will be plenty of time to discuss or ask any questions you may have regarding the adventure. Depending on arrival time, you can spend your day relaxing in the hotel or exploring Quito and the surrounding area. The city is recognized as The Cultural Capital of South America and the second most influential city of the old Inca Empire. We will start early in the morning from Quito and drive north through the majestic Andes. On our way, we will stop at a viewpoint to cherish Imbabura Volcano and Lake San Pablo. Once in Otavalo, you will have plenty of time to walk along the narrow cobblestone streets, filled with the Otavalo Native people wearing the traditional blue ponchos, white trousers, and long braided hair. Learn all about their daily life, everyday food, and native language. Explore their popular handicraft market, with its amazing textiles, alpaca throws and rugs, sewed clothing native paintings, ceramics, jewelry, tapestries and more at discount prices. In the afternoon, we will travel to Cotacachi to have lunch and experience the awesome leather goods of the town and enjoy the charm of this small village. Finally, we will reach Peguche, a small village famous for its waterfalls and wind instruments production.
Early in the morning, we will travel through valleys and farming villages to reach the Chimborazo Volcano, the highest mountain in Ecuador with an altitude of 6310 meters above sea level; whose peak is also the furthest point from the center of the earth on the entire globe. On a clear day, the beautiful peak of Chimborazo dominates the view for several kilometers. There will be a short hike for 0.9 km (0.57 mi) to reach the height of 5000 meters where the glacier originates. On the hike, we will see a few of the animals that populate this volcanic wonderland such as the Andean condor, Cara-cara, hummingbirds, and the timid vicunas. Once ended in Ecuador, they have been reintroduced and are now preserved; this lovely animal is related to the alpacas and llamas.
After an early breakfast, we will take a spectacular drive to the tiny town of Alausí. Here, we will board the train to the Devil’s Nose, where the trails wind through the countryside in a zigzag way, offering a travel experience like no other. After the train ride, we will continue our trip towards Ingapirca, the most significant Inca ruins of Ecuador. We will spend the evening learning about this archaeological site, famous for its unique fusion of Inca and native Canari architecture, as well as for its religious meaning. Later, we will head up to Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its colonial architecture
Starting in the morning enjoy an excellent city tour, exploring the most important buildings and famous places in Cuenca, such as Calderon Square, the New Cathedral, El Barranco and El Turi lookout point. In the afternoon visit a famous Panama hat factory where we will learn the whole process of making this traditional Ecuadorian hat. In the early evening, we will board a domestic flight back to Quito, where we will enjoy our farewell dinner.
