On arrival at the airport, your private guide will greet you and escort you to your hotel. Later, visit the historic Plaza de Armas, where you can see the Monument to the Patagonian Heroes and the impressive Catedral de Punta Arenas. Head to the Mercado Municipal, a bustling outdoor market where you can sample local delicacies and shop for souvenirs. Return to the hotel.
Wander the streets of Punta Arenas and explore the city. Take a 3-hour ferry ride to Isla Magdalena, a prevalent penguin-spotting location in South America. Approximately 60,000 breeding pairs come annually. Then travel to Bahia Inutil, where the only colony of king penguins outside Antarctica resides. After spending a day with these adorable penguins in their natural habitat, it is time to move toward Puerto Natales (a two-hour and forty-five minutes drive). Check into a luxury hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
Set out to the Torres del Paine National Park for a guided hike. Begin the walk up the Ascencio valley, with marvelous views of the Ascencio river. Arrive at the Chileno Refugio and take a break for water and refreshments. Then, go through a lovely grove of native Lenga (Beech) trees until you reach a glacial moraine (a ridge from the earth pushed by the glacier). Trek another hour from the moraine to the most incredible vista of the Torres del Paine rock towers! The views of the granite towers and glacial lake are spectacular. Then return to your Refugio for dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, pack your belongings and continue your hike along Lake Nordenskjold (named after a Swedish geologist who contributed significantly to the study of Glaciology). On Mt. Almirante Nieto, take in the spectacular views of the hanging glaciers above. Continue trekking until you reach the Refugio to relax and have dinner.
Begin your journey to the French Valley this morning. The French Valley is one of Torres del Paine National Park's most beautiful valleys. It is distinct due to the hanging glaciers, stunning granite cliffs, and spires. Watch glaciers calve (drop large icebergs) and listen to this natural symphony in the granite amphitheater. As you come closer to the granite spires and glacial lake, you may glimpse the turquoise color of glacial lake Pehoe on the way back. Continue walking until you reach your comfortable Refugio. Rest up and have a nice supper.
This morning, start your journey along Grey Lake. Enjoy views of electric blue icebergs and the spectacular Grey glacier while hiking. Hike to Lake Grey's northeast edge for a kayaking trip across the floating icebergs of Grey Lake and an incredible view of the ice river. After our kayak excursion, trek to the new Grey Lodge, where you will spend the night and have a delicious meal.
Your private guide will drive you to the airport in Punta Arenas for your flight back home.
